Cycling Tourism Area - Izu
In Japan, cycle tourism has been gaining momentum in recent years.
While it still does not compare to traditional cycling powerhouses, Japan offers high potential for enjoyable cycling experiences, thanks to its diverse scenery across all four seasons, well-maintained road infrastructure, and unique rest infrastructure led by convenience stores. Supported by trends in eco-tourism and decarbonization, the selection of "National Cycle Routes" began in 2019.
Not only at the national level but also at the municipal level, efforts to promote cycle tourism are increasing, and the Izu area is one of them. This article will introduce how to fully enjoy cycling in the Izu area, which is also recommended for excursions from Tokyo and cycling-specific incentive trips.
Cyclist-Friendly Initiatives
BICYCLE PIT
In Shizuoka Prefecture, where Izu is located, there is a strong push to promote cycle tourism and one of the initiatives is the BICYCLE PIT system.
Facilities with a BICYCLE PIT mark offer bicycle repair tools and air pumps, and many also have bike racks and resting places. There are about 300 such spots in the Izu area! When cycling in Izu, look out for the BICYCLE PIT marks to enhance your experience.
Cycle Train
In countries like the Netherlands and Germany, cycle trains that allow bicycles aboard are common, but in Japan, they are still few.
Interestingly, in Japan, cycle trains are increasing in areas focused on cycle tourism rather than daily commuting. Izu is one of these areas, where two cycle train lines operate regularly. Given the region's hilly terrain, clever use of the cycle train can make cycling in Izu more enjoyable.
*Note that there are restrictions on the number of trains running and the number of bicycles that can be boarded. Check with the railway companies in advance.

Route Introduction
Kano River Cycling Course
Start with a flat road to warm up your legs. This route heads north towards Mount Fuji along the Kano River, covering about 30 km with an elevation gain of 150 m. Most of the route runs along an easy cycling road by the river, and it offers views of Mount Fuji throughout. After reaching the base of Mount Fuji, if you're still up for more, you can make an ascent on Mount Fuji itself. The proximity to MERIDA X BASE also adds to the appeal.

Izu Circuit (Izuichi)
If you want to fully enjoy the Izu area, try this route.
It's a challenge for cyclists with good stamina. The total distance is over 200 km, mostly along coastal roads, and although it doesn't have the same feel as Milan–San Remo, the maximum elevation difference is 450 m with a total elevation gain of over 3500 m, making it more akin to the Ardennes classics. Prepare thoroughly with rest stops and gear.
If you're not confident in completing it in one day, consider making it a stage race. Izu offers many cyclist-friendly accommodations. After a day of riding, relaxing in a hot spring is a routine you should try in Japan.
