Yokohama Triennale 2024
Experience the Forefront of Contemporary Art
The Yokohama Triennale is being held from March 15 to June 9, 2024. The event, first held in 2001, is now in its 8th edition. In addition to showcasing works by internationally active artists, it has also introduced emerging talents and presented the latest trends in contemporary art.
This time, with the theme “Wild Grass: Our Lives,” the Triennale explores hope and solidarity in the post-pandemic world. The concept draws inspiration from the collection of poems “Wild Grass,” written by Chinese author Lu Xun during turbulent times, embodying the philosophy of wild grass that stands resilient and courageous even in challenging circumstances.
This Triennale presents works inspired by historical moments such as early 20th-century woodblock print movements, postwar cultural revival in East Asia, and 1960s political movements. Through art, it offers new perspectives on current social and political issues while reaffirming individual values.
By turning the spotlight on the world of art, the Triennale envisions a future of cross-border friendship while exploring new social structures through the layering of signals from each participant. It features 93 groups of artists from over 30 countries and regions.
Previous editions were primarily held at the Yokohama Museum of Art, but this year’s Triennale expands to five main venues: Former Daiichi Bank Yokohama Branch, BankART KAIKO, Queen’s Square YOKOHAMA, and the Motomachi-Chukagai Station Accessway. Additionally, the “many many arts” program is held throughout Yokohama, allowing visitors to enjoy art in various locations across the city.
The landscape where Yokohama’s historic architecture and streets blend with art is perfect for a stroll under the clear May skies. If you are visiting Yokohama now or planning to visit soon, don’t miss this opportunity! For more details, check out the official website.
